If the album SOUNDTRAX 2 RECOVERY does what we hope it can do and reaches beyond musical entertainment and dares to lay claim to being inspirational, something may happen to you that has happened to us. As we've listened back to these recordings we've been working on for all these years, various names pop into our heads; the names of friends and family that might be ready to hear these songs. If that happens to you, we'd like to make it easier for you to get a few extra copies of the CD to pass along when you feel the moment is right. Let us know how many copies you think you'd like to share and we'll send them to you regardless of the size of donation you can afford to make. We'd like to become your partners in reaching out to those on the journey to recovery. This is our way of joining with you to "musically pay it forward" and maybe, just maybe, enriching someone's life for good.

About a year ago, I was doing a gig in Woodland Hills, California. After the show, three old Batdorf and Rodney fans, Mike and Scott Hays and their friend, Richard Curiel introduced themselves to me and told me what big fans they were of B&R. They genuinely seemed excited about seeing me play after all these years. The three of them had been to many B&R shows in the 70s and started coming to more of my solo shows. A few months later, they came to Kulak's Woodshed and saw me perform with Mark Rodney. Mark had just played on my solo CD, Home Again, and sat in on a few of my solo gigs. They saw a few more shows and asked me to join them for lunch. To my surprise, they wanted to discuss the possibility of Mark and I doing a show in Orange County and they were even considering getting involved in a new Batdorf and Rodney recording. I thought they were out of their minds but as time went on, Mark and I were playing more and more and some of that early magic was rearing it’s head again. Scott decided to withdraw from the project and Jeanette Lundgren, who was handling publicity for me, decided to join up with Mike and Richard to form RMJ Productions with the plan to be executive producers and get this project off the ground. I had thought about maybe doing a live CD in Hawaii but as fate would have it, I got a call from Mike Marrone, program director of The Loft at XM Satellite Radio in Washington D.C. Thanks to Mike Marrone and Jerry Rubino, Mark Rodney and I recorded a Loft Session at the incredible XM recording studio on November 16, 2007. Along with the multi-talented Bill Batstone, we recorded an hour of music. It was like time had stood still. The playing, the singing, the vibe; it was like I was right back there in 1970 hearing those songs for the first time. XM Radio was nice enough to allow this show to be released on CD. This is a live studio recording - you can hear chairs squeaking, lips smacking, a few flat vocals, not to mention some tasty guitar clams! Thanks to XM Radio, I was given all of the unmixed raw tracks. I was then able to completely remix the live show adding EQ, reverbs, compressors etc. in the hopes of sounding reminiscent of the early albums. Back in LA, I added percussionist Scott Breadman on many of the songs to enhance the already cool session mix of the trio. I must say, I think it sounds pretty great! Also, as an added bonus, two brand new songs have been recorded at BatMac Studios in LA to bookend the live CD. The opening song, “Summer Of Love”, is written about the year I moved to California and what an impact all the great music of that time had on my life. The CD ends with a full-on acoustic rocker titled “Four Days Runnin’”. I am really excited about this project because it does two things simultaneously: it captures the essence of an era that shaped my musical youth with a refining that can only come with time.

Batdorf and Rodney Live At McCabes 1975 Order at: itsaboutmusic.com

I have played live music at some of the greatest venues in the country but there was always something special about playing at McCabes. During the day, McCabes was a guitar shop. They sold top of the line acoustical instruments and they had their own repair shop on the premises. In the back room the walls were lined with Martins,Taylors etc. and on the weekends that room became a concert hall holding around 150 people. The audience at McCabes are very sophisticated connoisseurs of great acoustic music. When you played there, you could hear a pin drop. Mark and I started playing there on hoot night which is another name for open mic night back in 1970. That’s the night new musicians get to play a couple of songs and if the booker liked what you did, you got asked back as an opening act on the weekend. At the time, Bobby Kimmel was the one in charge of booking the shows. Bobby had played bass and sang with the “Stone Ponies” a 60’s trio consisting Linda Ronstadt and Kenny Edwards. Well, when Bobby heard us he flipped. We were now the hot new local band at McCabes! As time went by, our first and second albums were released and we were hot! We were now popular enough to be headliners there as well as all over the country. When 1975 rolled around and we had just finished mixing “Life Is You”, we booked a weekend at McCabes. We did two shows a night and every show was completely sold out with standing room only. One of the attendees that weekend was none other than Henry Winkler, “The Fonz”! This concert was taped right off the sound board by Mike Holm, a good friend of mine who worked there with his wife Suzanne. This show was the fourth of four and as you will hear from this performance, let’s just say I was very relaxed!!!! This is the only live concert that I am aware of that exists. Mark and I performed with just our bass player, Rick Carlos. The mix wasn’t perfect on the 30 year old stereo two track 3 3/4 ips tape, but I was able to digitize and clean it up and I must say, it is very very tight considering just how relaxed we all were ..... I usually never said much in between songs but this night was different. Maybe it was a full moon that night or something ....... but whatever it was, hearing this show really makes me smile. I think anyone who was a B&R fan will be affected the same way too!

Batdorf and Rodney Live 1970
Order at: itsaboutmusic.com

John and MarkPreviously unreleased live stereo recordings by Batdorf & Rodney before "Off the Shelf" on October 24, 1970 in Las Vegas during an outside rehearsal high in the mountains. This recording took place only weeks before their audition with Atlantic Records President, Ahmet Ertegun in LA at the Beverly Hills Hotel. This is not a "studio" recording and is not a perfect sound recording either but it does offer some songs that we've never heard before and plenty of energy and banter from our favorite duo. For those of us who treasure Batdorf & Rodney, this is a "must own" artifact that takes us back in time to simpler and happier days.
