I guess Batdorf's easier to spell. Oh well, fame and fortune are short lived and fickle at best. Thanks for the magic. It truly was a magical mystery tour.

Loved your music in the 70's along with Dan Schwenker of Ohio. He just sent me pics of your small concert of a week or so ago. What fond memories!
Steve Barr - Monday, April 21st, 2008 1:59 PM PDT
I really enjoyed your show at Dayton's Canal Street Tavern on the 19th, April. My wife and really enjoyed the music. Your show gave me an opportunity to meet someone who I have worked with for 18 years via telephone but never met face to face, your bassist for the night, Tom Leatherwood. Thanks for that opportunity.

John, I just want to say Thank you so much for the wonderful show last night. Joe and I are so impressed and still in shock by the personal time you spent with us. I look forward to being able to see you again. Amy

John,
Love the song "Home Again" and would like to learn it on guitar. Any place I can find tuning and guitar tabs? Also, do you have any stops in the St. Louis area for future shows?

Hey John...every once in a while I come to look at YOUR guestbook. I know it's meant for YOU, but as a HUGE FAN, I really enjoy hearing what people say to you about your music...ESPECIALLY people who have just found you again after many, many years like I did. Music has changed ALOT over the past 30 or more years and I find it very comforting to see how true you have stayed to your craft and how many really smart people are STILL out there appreciating you. You already know I think you are "SIMPLY THE BEST"...and you are a pretty great guy too!!! EVER YOUR FRIEND & FAN, Charlette

John,
I cannot even begin to tell you how thrilled I was to find your website. I have been a fan since probably the early '70s. Since the advent of digital music and these new fangled CD's I have been bustin' my ass trying to find Batdorf and Rodney on CD with no luck I might add. I was on Itunes and found a couple of albums and then I found your website. I'll be buying some of your stuff including your new stuff. If you get a chance try to come out to Northern Virginia and do some shows. Once again, great to see ya dude! Thanks for the music.

Batdorf and Rodney were truly inspirational in my early guitar years. After 35 years, I just might pick up my Guild and start playing again ! Will you be coming to England in the near future?
Diane Guinn - Sunday, November 18th, 2007 6:47 PM PST
I mentioned your music to an old friend today, which made me wonder if it was possible to get your old albums on CD. I was one of your biggest fans at the Kitchen at UNLV, and probably saw you perform more than anyone. I remember when you and Mark Rodney started performing together! What great music, and what a great time in my life. I'll have to listen to your new (?) music, but it is hard to believe that anything could compare to the classics. Thanks!
Melinda Lucka - Sunday, November 18th, 2007 4:32 PM PST
Hi John,
Any chance of your coming back to Charleston SC? Would love to hear yall again; so glad Mark's singing with you. I heard you and James Lee Stanley at a small club and at a house concert in January 2006. My whole law office was listening to the old red and black album this past Friday--we're half in our 50's and the rest are in their 20's and 30's..we all would love for you to make it back to SC. Oh, my teenage boys think yall are fabulous; they have you on their IPods... my 14 yr old wants to know who your friend was that you wanted to "find a home for." Take care! Hope to see yall again.
Best of everything, Melinda

Hi John, I just wanted to thank you for the great show that you and Mark put on for everyone up at the Trinity House in Michigan. Man I must say, you have a voice that is second to none, and to get to shake your hand after the show was fantastic(I`m the dude that was wearing the black cap). I just bought some of your CD`s and a DVD from your site, that`s how much you impressed me that night, great work man, keep the songs coming. All the best to you, Mark and your family. Martin

Hello John,
In 1974 I walked into a music store in Long Beach California that seemed to be selling nothing but Batdorf & Rodney albums. The Walls were covered with them and so I bought one. This music changed my life. I was living in Boston at the time and had a guitar and singing partner that also fliped when he heard your sound. We now live in Scottsdale, AZ and still get together a couple times a month to Jam and work in my studio producing originals and jingles. When we get out the Martin guitars we still tend to incorporate your sound into our music. Thanks for the ride!
At your sevice,
Rob
Please visit my web site at colormiracles.com
PS: Do you have any plans to perform in AZ in the future?

Two years ago, I saw John perform with James Lee Stanley at the Kent Stage. It was excellent, but I really would have loved to hear more of John's own material. Last year I saw John perform as a solo artist at the same venue. It was unbelievable; an excellent mix of his solo work combined with some great Batdorf and Rodney songs. This past Saturday, we again went to the Kent Stage and saw John and Mark perform together. A truly magical evening. I really can't imagine it getting any better than this (unless they played for a couple more hours). John still sounded great on his solo material, but adding Mark to the Batdorf and Rodney tunes just seemed to make them complete. His guitar work was almost note for note perfect; you could close your eyes and easily imagine that it was the early 70's, and you were listening to one of their vinyl albums. I've been to a lot of concerts and seen a lot of big name acts over the decades, but for pure enjoyment, this was one of the best. My only hope is that they both return next year. Please.
William Van Zant - Sunday, September 30th, 2007 6:19 AM PDT
enjoyed seeing you and Mark at Canal Street. You gave Debby and me your song list. What would it take to get you and Mark to play for a private group. I am thinking next summer.Have a very private venue in mind.Fenced in, pool, indoor alternative, private home. A number of Dayton people & some friends. Locale I m thinking of is NE of Atlanta near Marietta. Hope we can work something out. My best to you. I feel like I owe you something.... ? Friday night was really special. Thanks.

I was at your concert tonight in Minden, NV. Thank you so much for coming; you made me want to be 20 again, and then I shed a tear or two because even your best song will not bring back my youth. Yeah, you really touched me. I bought the last copy (on the table) of "All Wood and Stones" and I think it is smashing. When I got home I watched your DVD and I cried again, but this time because I was so touched by that which obviously touched your heart, as well. So, I have a modest proposal for you although I certainly am no Jonathan Swift. And I will e-mail that proposal to you tomorrow. Right now, though, I am going to get horizontal and listen to my old man snore.

Just saw you and Mark Rodney at Boulevard Music in Culver City and you signed my album "Life is You" which I discovered is your least favorite. So I bought CD's of your prior albums and have been playing them constantly. They are awesome! Your music now and then is like magic, good karma and energy. The '70s will never ever happen again and I'm grateful that Batdorf & Rodney will forever be linked to a special time in my life. Thank you!!!

John....What a thrill it was to meet you and James in Roanoke. As a fan of yours since you and Mark released your first album, I was really pleased to be able to meet and chat with you for awhile. You guys simply sounded great, were wonderfully open and friendly towards me and my family and only wish that you could have played longer. I will continue to keep up with you through your web site and hope that you'll return to this area again before too long. Aloha John,
Juetta and I had a great time while you and Melanie were here in Maui. The house concert was the talk of the island. Just wanted to let you know that your music is spreading far and near. I called Chip Caldwell the other day (owner of the snorkel catamaran you went on). He was walking into his place in Telruride, Colorado listening to Home Again when I called. Another person at our house concert says your music is now her "traveling music" here in Maui. Will see you at Canal Street soon.....Doug and Juetta

Aloha John, It was wonderful meeting you today and listening to your lovely music here on Maui at our Upcountry Sunday Acoustic Style Show at Casanova. And meeting your wife too!!! Isn't her name Melanie? It takes me a couple of years to remember names. You gave me your phone number because I'm coming to LA for awhile and I'll give you a ring. It's good to know good people in LA. It's going to be quite an adventure for me as I've been wanting to do this a long time, and luckily have a good manager. It was so great meeting you and your kind wife. Come back to Maui again; we really appreciate your playing at our gig.

Hey John,
I made my living playing music for about 8 years through 1977. I was in SoCal when a roommate of mine introduced me to "Off The Shelf". I was floored.
The best music I'd heard in a long time and one of my favorites to date. I had the opportunity to see you and Mark play at the Troubador in Hollywood/Santa Monica. Great show!
When I heard "Wham Bam" on the radio by a group "Silver", I recognized that "voice". I bought the album. I have all 3 B&R albums.
Anxious to get Home Again.
Thanks for great memories.
Sam

Hi John,
I've been a fan since the early '70s when "Can You See Him" was all over the radio. My buddies and I learned it and would jam forever on that one.
"Off the Shelf" has been one of my most favorite albums ever. "All Wood and Stones" was surprisingly good. Even my wife likes it and she hates the Stones. Can't wait until I get the new one.
Happy New Year,
Dave

Good stuff my friend.

To all who enter and read here -- as well as to John -- HOME AGAIN is pure superb bliss for those of us who love harnonic vocals and to-die-for acoustic music. I urge all who visit here to go listen to the samples, read the history and the lyrics, and pre-order the CD. If you've already visited here because of John's past involvement in favorite music of yours, HOME AGAIN will quickly become a new favorite; of this I have no doubt.
Dean Docking - Saturday, December 23rd, 2006 8:36 PM PST
I first heard of John Batdorf when in about 1996 I picked up a tape titled Look Inside from the LDS Bookstore in Sydney Australia. My wife and I and 9 children were travelling along the East coast of Australia and 'Look Inside' became our favourite tape to play as we drove - hour after hour. The tape is quite worn now and try as I might I have been unable to get a new copy (on Cd). did recently purchase Batdorf and Mclean - The Early Years.
Your lyrics are superb - insightful and uplifting. Can't hear 'I Will Not Be Afraid' enough.
Thanks so much - your music touched us all during that holiday years ago and continues to provide inspiration to all in this family as we listen again and again to what can only be described as inspired lyrics / music.

If you are the son of one Jack Batdorf, from Ohio, I am Tom Lovejoy's nephew. If you are the same, I was lucky enough to sit in your kitchen one night about 1964, and listen to you play, and sing. I was a little guy, and you let me pick songs to sing while you, and my cousin, Mike Lovejoy played.
If you aren't the same, I still enjoyed your XM Loft special. If I don't get Wood & Stones for Christmas, I will be making the purchase. Try to get on XM again. Good suff you have.

John, "It was great chatting with you at Boulevard Music, and what a great show it was indeed. Your singing and playing is better than ever. I’m glad you remembered Kalapana and the Top of the Shop days. B&R’s concert at the Waikiki Shell in Hawaii (circa 74’) was wonderful and I remember those white chairs. It was so cool of you guys to stop in the Top of Shop to hear our 13 minute version of “Can You See Him". Also, thank you for letting me check you two axes, that D-21 is awesome!

the new song you played in san diego - i just must have it !!!!
I enjoyed the show and was in "Awe" to see you in person.
I thank my friend Mike Calderon for introducing me to your music so many years ago.
Jim Kaltenthaler - Saturday, July 22nd, 2006 10:58 AM PDT
John,
After twenty five years you are about to sit down with Mark and play again in my adopted home town of San Diego.(I actually live up in the mountains of San Diego in a little town called Julian.
Except for a reunion of the Beatles, nothing has excited me more than the thought of you and Mark playing together again. Your music has been a part of my life since those first notes of "Oh My Surprise" that I heard back in 1971.
I hope that you will feel my spirit there with you on the 30th of July because my family and I will unfortunately be in Oregon on a 3 week camping trip beginning this coming Tuesday, the 25th.
Believe me when I tell you that I regret few things in my life, I have been a blessed man, but on the evening of the 30th wherever I may be camping under the stars in some off the beaten path spot in Oregon, I will somehow know that my day will be a little less than it could have been for missing you and Mark.
Perhaps now was not meant to be the time for myself and my family to be there to see you , but hopefully later down the road that time will be right.
Enjoy San Diego and have a wonderful evening with your friends.
Sincerely,
Jim Kaltenthaler

Wow, my brother from Dayton just forwarded me your announcement that you'll be in the Wisconsin area this weekend so hopeful that i can get to one of the shows. Listening to "Home Again" off your web site brought back 30 years (eeekk!) since i saw you at The Palace in Dayton. Still sounds like the best acoustic music that can be found. Looking forward to your new stuff. Thanks for hanging in there. Chris
James Jones - Wednesday, July 5th, 2006 5:54 AM PDT
Yow... thanks to pandora.com, I heard "Paint it Black" and saw your name. "Hmmm...'Batdorf' isn't all that common a name," I thought, "Could it be...?" and I see that it is. Thanks for creating some fine music. "Home Again" is distilled joy, and just what this depressed college kid needed when it came out.
Richard DeCuir - Friday, June 30th, 2006 10:55 AM PDT
We first saw you, Mark and the band at Long Beach State College in 72 or 73. To this day Batdorf and Rodney is the band of choice for the DeCuir brothers. I'm sure there will be lots played when we get together in Medford Oregon next month.
Kate Hegger - Friday, June 23rd, 2006 9:55 AM PDT
Finally, I found you again! Have always been a huge fan of your music. One day as I was driving down the road, "Home Again" came on the radio and I was thrilled to death as I haven't heard that song in years. I had to pull over so I could hear every word and note so I wouldn't miss a thing! When I listen to your music, it makes me feel like I am TOTALLY alive and I can't get enough of it. The lyrics in your songs are fantastic and really make you think about life in a deeper way. I have requested to my family, that when my time comes and it's time for me to meet my Maker, I want "Home Again" played at my funeral. Thank you for sharing your God given talents to all of us. And...we would love to see you in ST. LOUIS, MO.
Nancy R Heard - Tuesday, June 20th, 2006 2:13 PM PDT

loved the music in the 70's none of my friends now has ever heard your music. they will now
Scott Hammond - Monday, May 15th, 2006 3:08 PM PDT
John: My wife and I really enjoyed seeing you at Canal Street in Dayton the other night. The acoustic Stones music was great! Bought the new CD on the way out. Thirty years ago I would have bet against me ever buying such a thing , but you've given it new life. Also great to hear some of the old Batdorf and Rodney stuff , even though it's 30 years old, its timeless and still stands up (we will have to buy the CDs now). You and Stanley really compliment each other. It's been fun watching your career unfold , first watching you bang out Monkee's tunes on the piano at kid birthday parties at the Semler farm (mid 60s), those first B & R albums (early 70s), a Silver concert at Wittenberg U (late 70s), hearing your voice and music on TV shows and commercials (80s and 90s), and now back to Dayton to play acoustic Stones - what a trip!
Your cousin Kurt wanted me to bring my Silver Album to Canal Street, but I opted not too, as I thought you wouldn't appreciate him screaming his requests for "Wham Bam"? from the audience!
You taught me my first song (lick) on the guitar at one of those Semler farm visits way back when, believe it was "Little Black Egg"?. Since then I never have been far from a guitar and I thank you for that. Good luck!
Doug West - Sunday, May 14th, 2006 9:51 AM PDT
John, I just wrote a short personal note to you but realized there may be some people who would like to know about your beginnings. When you were 14, we(the Trojans-a Dayton Ohio group specializing in Dylan and other not so often played artists)saw you at the Blue Moon in Xenia. Our lead singer was leaving for Viet Nam and we said "That's our new lead singer" You came to my parents house for an audition, bringing your electric piano, and blew us away with your "Summer in the City" Jon Sebastian tune. Immediately you became the center of the Trojans. All the teenie boopers would scream and holler when you'd get down on your knees and wale a tune like "Ruby Tuesday" or "I've Got You Babe". Our style changed to adapt to your talents and it certainly launched us into sub orbit. When we all graduated from high school (you were two years younger than us) we went to college and you went to LA. That's when you left sub orbit and we all know the rest. I'm glad you've never lost your roots. That was illustrated when you called me to give me front row seats at a B&R concert in Philly when I was in medical school. We stood up and left before Bread came on stage because you and Mark were done. As far as we were concerned, the concert was over. People thought we were weird to leave front row seats, but we old Trojans needed to discuss a few things. It really amused me yesterday when I called you and you asked me if I ever finished medical school. I think that radical, long haired medical student (still living in his rock and roll days)didn't inspire much confidence that I would become a surgeon. Great to see you and come full circle after 40 years. Hope to see you again soon.
Doug and Juetta West - Sunday, May 14th, 2006 9:22 AM PDT
Great seeing you last night John. When you get to Maui look us up so we can rehash the primitive days in the Trojans.
Julie Amos - Sunday, May 14th, 2006 8:07 AM PDT
Back in "the good ole days" (was it '73 or '74?), I had the wonderful opportunity to see Batdorf and Rodney with Harry Chapin at Wright State University. It was one of those concerts I've never forgotten. I was elated when I discovered you were going to be playing at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton. I was one of the first people in line and absolutely loved the show last night. The acoustic melodies were spell binding. When you played some of your earlier songs, it brought back so many memories and I was suprised I remembered some of the lyrics. I hope you didn't mind my harmonizing at the side of the stage. Keep up the great work - your musical talent is to be commended.

I saw Batdorf & Rodney about '74 near UCONN. It was a religious experience. No other concert ever hit the core of my being like that one. I think I may have even told them that on break.(no pick-up intended)So crisp, so clear, so TIGHT! Later, I became an entertainer myself. Tonight I was surfing and just "rediscovered" the music. Now I see Batdorf will be in Dayton in just 2 weeks! My first thoughts are, I can't take smokey bars anymore, alas, it's a smoke free event! That's too much of a coincidence to pass up. But how will it be without Rodney? Thanx for being some of the great memories of my youth. Any chance it was a Holy Ghost anointing I was perceiving?

Ron Lindeboom - Sunday, February 26th, 2006 7:04 AM PST
Hello John. I have followed your music since 'Off the Shelf' first came out many years ago. No matter how many years pass, the music stays fresh and meaningful, which is quite an accomplishment. I once had the chance to see Batdorf & Rodney in Portland, Oregon but one of you guys was sick with the flu and had to cancel. On the bill with you was some unknown guy named Jim Croce who I'd only ever heard of from 'Bad, Bad Leroy Brown' and I could have cared less about hearing that so I cashed in my tickets for a refund and went home. Within a matter of months he died in a plane crash and the good stuff came out. I have always regretted both having not had the chance to see Batdorf & Rodney on your first tour and for having never seen Jim Croce. I can only imagine what a magical night it would have been to see both Batdorf & Rodney and Jim Croce in a single show. Thank you for a lot of great music, John. I have everything you've recorded over the years. Ron Lindeboom, creativecow.net

John-Everyone thinks that they are your biggest fan, and I'm sure we all are. However, I have been loving your music longer than most. After driving 6 hours to see you play at Gayle's Perks last Friday, My friend & I listened to your CD with Michael on the way home. I was so wired from all the coffee & so moved by the music of you & your friends that I would never have slept anyway. Seeing you play in that small intimate setting was like being at home with friends. When Gen & I use to follow you guys around in your SILVER days I always wished I could see you guys play in that type of setting. For you fans that don't know, almost 30 years ago my friend Gen/Donna & I decide to drive to Colorado one weekend to surprise John & all the other SILVER band members. We got all the way there only to find out the show had been cancelled. On the way home Gen/Donna drove us over a cliff in Larame, Wyoming & we had to get towed back up onto the road. We were in our twenties then. Now here we are in our fifties...each driving 6 hours to see you again (top that you youngsters). We fell in love with your music along time ago and the love affair continues today. In case you didn't notice we knew all the words to all your Silver songs and many others...WE ARE YOUR GREATEST FANS...but there is always room for even greater fans!Your new stuff is awesome and I loved hearing you play with Michael. His son is so young & talented...I hope to hear more from him in the future. Seeing Greg was wonderful. I'm glad he's doing something with his songs...it would be such a waste not to share them with the world. It was good to see that Steve is still with you sometimes...takes me back to Indigo recording studio. AND you still have the most beautiful wife...how lucky you both are to have each other after all this time. Don't be surprised to see me again soon. We laughed on the way home that we drove all the way to LA to kick back & relax & hear some great music with people who are so warm & down to earth...a rare treat for the music world. Thanks again John (& Friends) You made my heart sing...EVER YOUR FAN, Love, Charlette

Great music... and with Stanley doing Stones - WOW!!! Beats 'Pickin' on...' series any day... Keep the Acoustic Duo stuff.. that is the best (like the XM show)... I remember several artists and several styles that most influenced my own style of music writing and acoustic guitar work. I can tell you that there's been no more lasting influence than Batdorf & Rodney. The combination of acoustic lead guitar, clear and unaltered vocals, and "up and down the neck" rythym's are still present in my music today.
Thank you so much for your early work......and now for being available and staying in touch. Your music still lives on the Sunday morning classics show on KSHE 95 in St. Louis. You might want to give John Ulett (the host) a call.

Youse guys go off! (At least you did in the 70's) I wasn't there unfortunately cos I'm only 17 but I have never heard anything as exceptional as your intricate playing and incredible sonwriting ability. You have inspired me and as I sit here with my guitar I want to know...where can I get some tabs of you guys? All I have so far is parts of some songs my dad tought me. We are keeping the dream alive down here in australia and listening to you always. You are the soundtrack to my life.

For the last 25 years I've been asking stray people if they had B & R albums - particularly the 2nd ( the lip of the LP melted ). I've been connected to the web for years now - don't know why I never thought of "a search" before.
I ordered the album.

For years I would think of a song but couldn't for the life of me remember your names, until I saw it on the XM display...i was very excited and immediately had to look you up on the internet and get the cd's.
Just hearing the music brings back so many fond memories of the people I was with at the time, what a joy....thanks John
Best of luck with your new ventures.

WOW! Running the halls of CMT.com the other night and run across the page of Batdorf & Rodney and started to laugh and was completely amazed that I remembered all the words to the songs after all these years! My ex got the albums in the divorce so I hadn't heard these songs in 25 years at least. Ordered everything CMT shop had and CDbaby. Can't wait to get a hold of them again and my husband is impressed with what he heard off the websites. Managed to find Jackie, too, after 15 years and we are both looking forward to renewal of the friendship. You're a long way from Hooterville, boy!!! Spreading the word about ya on all the places I hang in cyberspace, think everyone will be very happy to hear your stuff. Especially love the "All Wood and Stones" album -- very impressive. Doing the little happy dance!!! Monica

Discovered you and Mark when we were playing acoustic music in the Rochester, NY area in the mid seventies. We even did a cover of "Where Were You and I". The guitar work and the harmonies were an amazing quality the two of us aspired to...thanks! I wish we could play you on our radio show on I-95 in Danbury, CT. Check the website at wwwi95rock.com

Your Album was the first album i ever picked out for myself. When I was 8 years old my dads buddy owned a record store in windsor ontario. He told me I could have any album i wanted. At the time i just looked at the album cover saw my name and looked at the cover with the faces in the letters and thought it was cool. All I NEED, is a great song and ive played it quite a bit. I mixed it in with some of my tapes that include Cream, Rush and others and it always makes my day to hear it. I still have the album and i played it tonight and i thought id type in your names to see if u still existed. Its great your still playing and if u ever get to Toronto or Montreal let me know. Oh yeah and dont forget to call rodney if ya get a chance. CHEERS!Ive got a cd comin out soon too its freetimefighters.com check it out if u get a chance. some of my music will be downloadable. Once again good to know your still making music i would have never known.

John,
I saw you and Mark on an open mic night in 1969 at the Three Muses in San Clemente. A guy named Al Elio won the competition and you guys showed up after he won. You asked if you could play a few songs before the paid band came on stage. You started out with Oh My Surprise!
You blew us away! Glad to hear you are still rocking.

One band was Kalapana--whom I believe you will remember. I met you and Mark backstage at the Waikiki Shell for your first concert in Hawaii. You and Mark have influenced, and changed forever, my guitar style. You both had such an wonderful chemistry...bar none. Keep up the writing and singing!!

Dear John,
Saw you play at the canyon Club in Agroua Hills Sat 10/15/05. Met you after the show. Growing up in Las Vegas, I along with my friends saw you and Mark perform many times. We were convinced you guys would be big. Maybe that didn’t happen but your music back then is still some of my favorite music. Maybe the day will come were you and Mark might get together. If Loggins and Messina can you guys should as the new generations today would be blessed to here the two of you together again.I mentioned to you that I have been in serch of your albums from that era. My brother has the Off the Shelf album but it is damaged some what.Thankfully you have remartered those great albums and I will be ordering them from you now and can’t wait to hear that music again.

I am glad to see that you are still around. Several years ago (about 31 of them) I came across your album Off The Shelf. I did not have a record player so I purchased a cassette tape. Love it! Played it a lot! Got married, had 4 kids, got divorced years later and the tape got packed away. Six years ago I was telling my new and current and forever wife about this tape I have that was great. I had to explain to her about your guys since she is 18 years younger than me. After six years I found the tape packed in a box that I never would have thought it would have been in. In a box of photos of my kids! I played it for my wife this morning. She loves it. When we went to play it again the tape broke. So several words ($*&!*&!!) were said. Now that I see that I can get it in CD, come payday we are buying it. Thanks for the years great music. You reached out and touched my life again and my wife’s life. Stay healthy and keep making music. Sincerely, Michael

Have you thought about redoing your B&R stuff with JL stanley? I think it would be great!

In the early 70s I heard a song about 4 times only on FM radio. It was "By Today", and it blew me away. I could still remember the melody, guitar solo bridge, and some of the lyrics just last week, some 30 years later. It just popped into my head.
I never knew who wrote or performed that song until about five minutes ago. I was on the Allmusic.com (AMG) site, and on a whim I searched for "By Today". I can’t say why I never tried this before, but I’m really glad I just did.
I have been a guitarist, singer and songwriter for most of my adult life. Sadly, like so many, I’ve let it go in the last ten years, and so I’m no longer a practicing musician. All I can say is, you have played something close to what I’ve heard in my head for the last 30 years.
I’m really glad to have found your site, and you can be sure I’m going to order both of these records right now.

I listened to and loved you guys from the early 1970’s when I was at UC Santa Cruz. Your music was unique with and upbeat energy and lifted my spirit in a way that no other musicians did. Years later when I finally had the money to have a system and was trying to collect music that I had loved before, I tried to get your albums/cd’s but couldn’t find them anywhere. This went on for years and I was about to give up hope of ever hearing you guys again. Then Amazon indicated they could get your cd’s and I was thrilled, but they kept postponing it every 3 weeks for the last 4 months and I finally gave up. It was a lucky thing, because it made me search again and I found this site where I not only got to order your cd’s at last, but got to hear about how you guys got started and what’s gone on since. I know you would have liked being even more famous than you were, and for your sake I wish you had been, but it kind of shows me that like many other artists, the best aren’t always the most popular. All I know is that I love a lot of kinds of music and different bands, but when I hear you guys, it makes me feel a way that no one else makes me feel -- like there’s nothing better in life than this; that this is what life is all about and I can’t even explain quite why, but that’s how it makes me feel. And now with your cd’s I can feel that way anytiime.
I just want to say, thanks!

When I was in high school in Las Vegas, my friend, Ray Dodd and myself used to go to the UNLV coffehouse to see John and Mark. I was so impressed with them as they were doing what I hoped to do when I "grew up". As it turns out, I was a professional musician in the midwest for several years with a little success but not enough to keep it going. I still remember getting the Batdorf and Rodney album, the red and black one, and how it blew me away. As good as John and Mark were, these guys were even better. Oh, by the way, Ray and I went to school with John Mauceri in Las Vegas, Valley High. Wonder what ever happended to him.

I've been trying to find out if the Silver album was ever rereleased or out on CD. So far, I guess not. I bought that album in 19788 and it remains one of my favorites, although it's getting pretty rough to listen to these days (moves all over the country sort of takes a toll on the vinyl I guess). Anyhow, I love your music and thanks for keeping the song alive.

You were a huge part of my life when I was about 12. I'll never forget when you guys opened for Dan Fogelberg (spelling?),in Nashville and got a standing ovation and they turned the lights on to bring Dan out. The crowd was furious. Also, Mom and I drove with Uncle Jack to a small town by Nashville to go to your concert. The next morning, Rick your bass player ate breakfast with me. That was way cool. Also, Rick let Mom borrow his jeans because she really liked them.
Anyway, when we weren't with you, we were listening to your music. I hope you are happy in life and I am really glad that you and Melanie are still together. Uncle Jack spoke very highly of her. I would like to meet her sometime.

There's an incredible feeling that comes over one when he or she is able to locate a treasure they lost years before. Such is the case for me when I discovered I could get the original Batdorf & Rodney CDs a year or so ago. I absolutely fell in love with the self-titled album they put out in 1971 or thereabouts. I was in the military, stationed at Ft. Meade Md, and listened to their music on WHFS in Bethesda, MD. Over the years, I had, then lost, the albums. I never thought these obscure (but superb) albums would be available on CD. Now, as frosting on the cake, I've discovered this site and will now be able to catch up on the works of John Batdorf... and there's apparently a LOT of catching up to do! Is this Internet great or what? Thank you, John, for some wonderful music that got me through some very tough times in my life... and became a kind of soundtrack for some pretty great moments too. Like the lyrics say, "All my life, I've waited for this day, I am home again!"

Would you please verify that any of your Batdorf & Rodney lyrics were ever composed by college students and purchased for your recordings?
I've been attempting to verify a Mike Chester who claims to have been a composer of one of your song's lyrics from the early 70s. Thanks!

John,
I cannot even begin to tell you how thrilled I was to find your website.

Thanks!

Hi John,
Any chance of your coming back to Charleston SC? Would love to hear yall again; so glad Mark's singing with you. I heard you and James Lee Stanley at a small club and at a house concert in January 2006. My whole law office was listening to the old red and black album this past Friday--we're half in our 50's and the rest are in their 20's and 30's..we all would love for you to make it back to SC. Oh, my teenage boys think yall are fabulous; they have you on their IPods... my 14 yr old wants to know who your friend was that you wanted to "find a home for." Take care! Hope to see yall again.
Best of everything, Melinda

Happy New Year,
Dave

I listened to "Home Again" and feel like I should light a Bic lighter, asking for more-more-more.
Good stuff my friend.
With every good wish,

To all who enter and read here -- as well as to John -- HOME AGAIN is pure superb bliss for those of us who love harnonic vocals and to-die-for acoustic music. I urge all who visit here to go listen to the samples, read the history and the lyrics, and pre-order the CD. If you've already visited here because of John's past involvement in favorite music of yours, HOME AGAIN will quickly become a new favorite; of this I have no doubt.

LOUIS, MO.

loved the music in the 70's none of my friends now has ever heard your music. they will now
Scott Hammond - Monday, May 15th, 2006 3:08 PM PDT

Too many things to say in appreciation for your years of great writing. I first heard you at USC (LA) in 72 (I think). Even have a recording of you and Mark on KPPC doing the 'The Play'... never heard it anywhere else... Found you in the early 90's with McLean and rejoiced.. Great music... and with Stanley doing Stones - WOW!!! Beats 'Pickin' on...' series any day... Keep the Acoustic Duo stuff.. that is the best (like the XM show)... Do Jammin' Java in Vienna, VA sometime... love to see you in person again... Your music has stayed with some of us a long long time....

Robin Kessinger signed your guestbook. He is an awesome flatpicker I met at the Augusta Heritage Center in the 80s. I bet he has CDs out.
Best of Luck !!!

AWAS - GREAT ALBUM!! Outstanding version of Stones early hits. I was a big B&R fan, one of my all time favorite songs was "Home Again". Love acoutic rock music. I hope you might get to the east coast to promote the album.
There is a great place in the trenton area called Grounds For Sculpture. See http://www.crossingconcerts.com/gsconcerts.htm Best of luck and success.

Monica

I saw you and Mark on an open mic night in 1969 at the Three Muses in San Clemente. A guy named Al Elio won the competition and you guys showed up after he won. You asked if you could play a few songs before the paid band came on stage. You started out with Oh My Surprise!

Dear John,
Saw you play at the canyon Club in Agroua Hills Sat 10/15/05.

Sure would love to have some sheet music or at least tab or chord for your music. I love everything I've ever heard from the early B&R to the more recent B&M. Thanks! You Are A Song!

I played the Batdorf & Rodney album at the first station I worked for in Eugene, Oregon 30 years ago and was delighted to see your name on the "All Wood and Stones" album. What a wonderful CD! Glad to find you again after all those years.

Thanks!
